also considering that NK has the 4th largest standing military in the world and SK isnt even in the top 30 would also lend creedence to the idea that the north holds a considerable advantage over the south in terms of military strength

ah, another Iraq (they used to have the fourth largest standing army in the world).

if the South Koreans do not feel themselves to be at risk of an invasion why should they believe a country with your recent trackrecord ?

well NK obviously isn't going to invade SK today...it would be suicide...

but then what is the picture of a united korea that kevin claims the US is stopping from happening? the only plan for a united korea that has been on the table in the past 50 years is the one that NK tried to enact during and after the korean war...

i just don't understand what united asian power the united states is keeping from happening by its involvement with SK?

the fear (for the US corporate power theorists) is not an invasion of the south by the north, but the exact opposite.

a united Korea will open up the north to becoming part of an active and increasingly powerful economy. Koreans are immensely hard working people and - as in countries like Singapore - education and training are taken very seriously.

the reason that these economies have been able to move so fast is simply that they are so good.

in other words, they cannot be controlled or subjected to the economic dominance that the corporate theorists require. When the theorists talk of free trade it is the last thing that they want. An openly competitive situation means that they would have to work harder and better to maintain either a market edge or even a place within the market.

the problem comes back to the low standards of an increasing number of Western top management.

And they are the people behind Bush.

The sad aspect of this is that civilizations die without knowing where they went wrong. As the motivations for denial of the truth, when it conflicts with positive self-image, are both personal and communal, objective truth is an early casualty. The train on track to a collision wil only be slowed or diverted from its fatal course by those who 1) understand what is happening and 2) are in a position to do something about it.

The truths laid out in the previous post fall on deaf ears; the forces arrayed to keep on the present course grow stronger every day. And "they'll never know what hit them."

that seems odd in that NK SK and china are all seeking western investment... why would the west fear in something they are invested in?

President Bush has articulated the American position that Iran will not be allowed to possess a nuclear warhead. The media has taken this to mean that we are going to invade Iran to stop it from happening, but Bush says that's not the case. He wants other countries to apply pressure on Iran to make them understand it's not in their best interests to pursue nukes.

So what do the - dumb slur - want to do? But of course...they want to reward Iran and play the blackmail game. Those amazingeuroweenies want to give Iran some stuff in exchange for abandoning a program to develop nuclear weapons. They're talking about selling them an Airbus jet, or some such thing.

You don't have to be a foreign policy expert to see where this will go. Give Iran a few nifty jumbo jets to abandon their nuke program and other nations will take notice. How long, for instance, do you think it will be before Pakistan announces that they're going to proceed with a reformed nuclear program ... then sit back and wait for their goodies from the West (or as RH has hinted, invade them)? North Korea? How much will we have to give them? Then, as sure as night follows day, these countries will cool their heels for a few years and then crank those nuke programs up once again. Then they'll sit back to see what type of largess they can extract from the West to stop the programs yet again.

This is appeasement, and appeasement breeds resent. Clinton was an appeaser. That's why we're facing what we are in North Korea right now (That and Jimmy Carter's irresponsible freelancing).

I guess we're just going to have to leave this one up to Israel in the middle east and China in the far east Shocked

It has sometimes seemed to me, in the last couple of years, that Jimmy Carter's and Zbignief Brezinsky's have been the only voices of enlightenment from past US administrations to be heard internationally.

Thanks be that Henry Kissinger hasn't the will or energy (apparently) to speak out, much, though who knows what his organization is doing, behind the scenes. . .

Now SDR... about Carter (the appeasement President), and the man who never met a dictator he didn't like.

First off, the media likes to project this image of Jimmy Carter as a bipartisan figure, who is above the fray of electoral politics. That couldn't be any further from the truth. You need look no further than Carter's speech to the Democratic National Convention to confirm his Bush-Bashing credentials.

Thats right KM, when things in Iraq have suddenly taken a serious turn for the better, the Democrats have been muzzled on that issue following such successful elections. And we have heard nary a peep out of the likes of George Soros, Michael Moore and Jimmy Carter, and many other Democrats who flat out said elections weren't possible. In other words, there are a lot of those on the left that now have egg on their face....redact that Shocked
