In all the insanity of today, I think I am seeing something shape up on the world scene which throws ANOTHER monkey wrench into Asian Peace.

As if we don't have enough bad news in the world, and enough of a financial crush, I believe the North Koreans have reached an impasse of sorts, wherein they can't keep doing what they are doing and survive, and they can't keep doing what they are doing without antagonizing everyone around them, including China their strongest ally.

Having just read that the North Koreans warned civilian airlines to stay out of North Korean air space, and having been warned against testing a ballistic missle shot into the Pacific, and warning against a joint US/South Korean military exercise, in all my stupid predictions of before, I just may be adding to them tonight.

I am of the strongest opinion that North Korea will soon make a very aggressive military move to provoke a counter-attack by the United States and Korea.

Now, of course we would say, that is insanity, they would never try that and WIN! Well, if all the North Koreans had in their arsenal was victory after prosperity after success, I would understand how they would want to win.

But I think that the North Koreans think that "losing to the West" might be an improvement over the vast failure and starvation and poverty which decimated their society for several decades. So why declare defeat on all fronts, when you can provoke a patriotic LOSS, then win?

And then indirectly join in the success of the West?

I mean, look at Gaza, with America giving them $900 million in rebuilding aid?

The Contrarian speaks. Go ahead, shoot me.

Let me add my name to the list that might suggest, bringing the Somali pirate to the United States will launch 100 maritime hijacking attempts and make this pirate a rock star.

This guy, with a few unconfirmed identities including Abduhl Wali-i-Musi, is living the worldwide dream, of coming to America, under such worldwide publicity!

And what is his economic condition back in Somalia? Penniless and near starvation, in a country of total anarchy. What does he have to lose?

The great Ron Kuby, whom I admire greatly, might be forming a legal team in his defense, and I am sure he will do the talk show circuit before he is through.

My bet: He will become a national hero in Somalia?

Again, I am master of the obvious...
US, SKorea militaries gird for NKorean provocation
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090528/ap_on_re_as/as_koreas_nuclear

I participate in a Japanese American forum similar to the Fireside Forum.

In the last 30-45 days, several "obviously American sounding identities" have been created, under various IP addresses, spewing extremely derisive anti-Japanese diatribes, to the point of being banned one by one, and then replaced with new identities.

The various American style identities play roles of macho cowboy auto worker slamming Japanese manufacturing, or Air Force cowboy pilot enjoying targeting people, and celebrating Pearl Harbor, or feminizing the Japanese Royal family.

Each identity gets banned, and then each identity seems to be replaced by an authentic sounding American name.

Yes, I am paranoid, or is the internet the new propaganda tool for aiming to influence readers?

I see a parallel between the Somali pirate and Kim Jong-il... Starvation, destitution, isolation from the world community at home, with nothing to lose and more to gain by violence.

War, I am afraid, is inevitable, and it could happen anywhere. Be vigilant!

Truth is, they are not "saving themselves", but only getting the entire world upset with their recent actions.

They now have practically everyone against them and should they proceed with their threats, they will only be further isolated, and the nations of the world will be forced to take firm action against them, because of their own doing.

This is not intelligent behavior, but that of mad dictatorships who do not listen to anyone.

Their furry and steaming over nothing will not help them "save themselves" by just getting more attention.

And predicting they will "cause a war" to save themselves is only adding fuel to the fire by encouraging them to do just this. So perhaps it should not even be suggested, as the last thing everyone wants is another war. Much less to be forced into war simply because of the stupidity of a mad dictatorship who insists on pursuing the development of weapons of mass destruction for the purpose of intimidating the rest of the world and to demonstrate how brave, mean and hard they are. What purpose is there in this? Such behavior of stubborn arrogance and pride is only leading the world down a dangerous path of a new arms race. For what reason? If weapons are developed and held for the purpose of maintaining peace, as the US does, it can be a good thing, as it deters wars. But when nuclear weapons fall into the hands of mad dictatorships, it becomes a world danger and one that the world will not be able to just sit back and watch without doing nothing.

By their attitude, they are forcing the world into action that will have very dire consequences for North Korea, should they proceed with their stubborn, hardened attitude and insistence on developing nuclear weapons, launching of missiles and then their use to intimidate the rest of the world.

This tactic will not work and will be the demise of North Korea.

We don't need another war yet the world doesn't need another mad dictatorship to put in jeopardy world peace and stability.

Either they lay down their claims to nuclear weapons or the world is in for another major war. One can only hope and pray they will desist of their madness, or can be bargained into re-considering their position, before the entire world is forced into taking action against them for their madness.

A few nuclear weapons they may hold in their hands will not save them from the furry of the entire world coming against them, unleashing tons of weapons against the gates of North Korea. What can a few nuclear weapons do against a world arsenal of billions of mega tons of nuclear power that the world combined holds? They would only be insane to even try to use a nuclear weapon against someone, as they would be obliterated in the process, and not one nation would accept being attacked with a nuclear weapon and allow them to go on.

North Korea's development and testing of nuclear weapons must stop immediately or they will face the consequences of their foolish behavior.

The warning has been made. May God have mercy on them if they refuse to listen to the world.

We all don't want another war, so we can only hope that by diplomatic means, North Korea eventually will realize their error and desist of developing nuclear weapons and stop testing their long range missiles before it is too late.

Justy... two things.

Kim Jong il may be dieing, and the speculation is that he is galvanizing (through war blustering) his people behind his youngest son, who he named as successor three or four days ago.

Either way, we don't want war, and deep down, they don't either, nor does China.

I say offer an olive branch of let's say, 100 fish farms financed by the US, off the coast of North Korea, recognition of their right to coexist peacefully with all their neighbors, but like Teddy Roosevelt said...

"Speak softly..."

And it may come to war, anyways, despite all peaceful gestures, which would be horrible.

It would not be the first time that "being nice" only fueled the war, while a "wake up call", a la Lybia-Kadhafy, prevented a war and further acts of violence.

This may be the case - they are drumming up support for the son, creating a sense of patriotism and a desire of national expression by asserting themselves to have a right of nuclear bombs, to be used to intimidate their enemies and gain more power for the leaders, allowing them to be independent and do whatever they want, including threatening China or South Korea to get out of their way. Perhaps they envy the South and see it's financial prosperity as a threat to their own lack of economic success. The same applies to China, in their view. So the only way to assert themselves dominant is by bluffing their way through with nuclear weapons.

In the end, one can really doubt that being nice to a staunch government such as this one will cause them to deter from their pathway chosen. Most likely only firm decisive global agreement on action needed will have any effect and even that is doubtful.

One can only hope some solution will be found to this stalemate, including the innocent reporters that were sentenced to something like 17 years was it in slave type concentration camps. This is only further increasing resentment against North Korea, for condemning these innocent reporters. One can only hope they would show a little mercy and realize they were only doing there job as reporters, not spying. This is paranoia to believe they were spying on North Korea. And the poor reporters in no way should be now punished for Korea's ill intention toward the rest of the world.

It is high time North Korea learn to take it easy, relax, and stop trying to play nuclear chess games.

After the latest UN resolution on the blockade of shipments of arms and the like to N. Korea, and N. Korea's defiant reaction, one can only wonder what they are really up to.

It hasn't been seen where one country can defy the U.N. and get by with it. Look what happened to Hitler.

N. Korea is now trying to pin the blame on the U.S., saying they are wanting to attack N. Korea. Everyone knows this is not the case. The U.S. is not to blame. In fact, it was a U.N. resolution, one with the support of all the countries involved, so they cannot now put the blame on the U.S. for the UN resolution as a reaction to their hard headed defiance.

Whether this will lead to a war or not one can only speculate. But certainly N. Korea will pay a dear price for their defiance, and one can only hope they will come to their senses and realize their program of uranium enrichment and further production of nuclear weapons is only going to get them into further trouble, and further augment their economic problems, causing the country to be only further isolated and impoverished, due to the radical stupidity of a few leaders who will not back down and realize their thinking is only doing them more harm them good.

Now, they are placing the U.N. in a very difficult position and forcing them to act. There is no way the U.N. will just sit back and not execute it's resolution and it appears as well N. Korea is very hard headed about expanding it's enrichment program. So this brings the world to a stale-mate with no solution until N. Korea is willing to admit it's error and understand that nobody is wanting to attack N. Korea. Everyone wants peace. Their pursuit of nuclear weapons is only making the world a less safe place and allowing them to go on would only be setting a dangerous precedent and this the U.N. is fully aware of.

When the U.N. carries out their resolution, and they will, if N. Korea attacks someone, or uses a nuclear device, this will mean a very dire future and certainly N. Korea does not stand to gain from having the entire world against them. Nobody will just sit back and allow them to use such a device and take no action against them. And even is such a device is not used, and they conduct an attack, the world will not just sit back and watch as well.

Truly this is a clear important significant turning point for world events, and the attitude and behavior of N. Korea will be a decisive factor to determine the fate of the future of millions and their own future as well.

Justy,

First of all, you seem to be right in all your opinions here.

But we are guessing at madness, as you stated here before.

Let me add more madness, as I am reminded of a particular phenomena locally, called "suicide by cop".

A terminally ill person wants to die, but needs to be killed in a glorious way, preferably by a police officer.

He shoots a missle, nobody pays attention.
He test nukes, nobody listens.
He kidnaps and incarcerates two female journalists documenting the female slave trade originating out of starving North Korea. Nobody pays attention.
He threatens to enrich nukes for weapons purposes. People pay attention, but hold back.

He wants to be attacked, and I say if anyone does attack, he will magically die as if killed by that opposing force, forever being remembered as a martyr, and his youngest son becoming the new King, with everyone rallying around him. But I am now guessing his euthenased death is already planned.

Otherwise, if no one attacks, he may die not from cancer, but worse, possibly from AIDS, and his published, penchant for spam prostitutes will be exposed, consequently his son will be defamed and dethroned.

What does a dieing man want?

He wants a rich martyr legacy, his own son being crowned the new King forever, all the time fearing the possibility of complete humiliation and disgrace. (Echos of Yasir Arafat, probably-reportedly dieing of AIDS, with a billion dollars stashed in Swiss bank accounts, correct me if I am wrong)

China holds the key in this evolving tragedy, not the United States. Nuclear weapons are horrible to begin with and would directly effect the health of the entire Chinese population if detonated nearby. They have to stop this clown, not us.

It is clear to me, this guy Kim Jong Il wants to be attacked and killed by America, he is pushing all the buttons, and I say it is because he knows he is dieing, and maybe for humiliating reasons that threatens his sons future.

PostPosted: Thu Jun 18, 2009 8:02 pm    Post subject: tensions rising in Asia Reply with quoteFind all posts by justellus

With the latest N.K. launch of a military vessel, the tensions are certainly rising in the South. Obviously the U.N. resolution is mild and weak, as it mandates the vessels request permission for inspection of any suspect vessels that may be carrying illegal arms in or out of N. Korea. If they refuse to allow the inspection, certainly a new resolution will be needed, that will mandate the inspection.

Certainly nobody wants a war and they are treading on eggs. On the other hand, like-wise they will not allow a small "bully", so to speak, to threaten international peace.

So the gravest threat at this moment is N. Korea. Either they are awaiting provocation as an excuse to cause a problem to deal with, or they believe they can get their way by threats and by provoking the entire world. Whatever the case, the situation certainly has escalated to a very serious level and this calls for an urgent U.N. council meeting on this subject, to decide quickly how to deal with the situation, or immediate action on the part of China and Russia to deal with the situation or attempt to resolve it. One can only hope there is time to do so before the "madman" attempts another foolish move that would only escalate tensions even further.

The fraudulent elections in Iran may not be a direct threat to the U.S., but the possible use of nuclear energy for the wrong purpose in that region as well is another concern. And maintaining a fraudulent leader in place or recognizing the validity of the elections may be, if the same man is to pursue policies which also endanger world security. If another madman is able to conduct fraudulent elections, then certainly he is able to lie about his intents when it comes to the use of nuclear power. So this only requires the world to be aware on two fronts, with the South Asian front of the highest concern at this juncture.

We have seen recently the military ship reverting it's course, possibly signaling an easing of tensions in the area.

Here is an another interesting article with some very interesting user comments on this subject. :

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/06/29/world/main5120562.shtml

Here is what a few have to say:

Quote:
by formrusmcsgt June 29, 2009 3:04 AM PDT

The <Korean>paper also accused the U.S. of deploying nuclear-powered aircraft and atomic-armed submarines in waters near the Korean peninsula...
----
Quite a trick considering that there is no such thing as a nuclear powered a/c......

Exactly, N. Korea now is dreaming of nuclear power planes that don't even exist! This only demonstrates their accusations against the US are unfounded. How could be be flying nuclear powered planes over N. Korea if they don't even exist. This N. Korean leader is hilarious.

We shouldn't be giving him the attention he is receiving. He is a joker wanting to provoke a war, and a bully that feels he can con the world into doing whatever he says, by threatening to develop more nuclear weapons.

The world should not give in to his threats, nor should we start a war. But clearly if this madman takes the initiative to start a war on his own, he will pay the price. The allies will show no mercy to a madman who is threatening world peace.

The UN will impose the sanctions and if N. Korea dares to start a war because of this, they will pay the full price for their stupidity. Their nuclear arsenal will not stand a chance against the allies. If they attack the US, they are history. If they attack S, Korea, that will be N. Korea's end as well, as the US is fully bent on defending S. Korea should she be attacked.

This madman is as a mouse being cornered. He has nowhere to go. Anything he does will spell disaster for N. Korea. One can only hope his leadership will not last long, or the world will be in for big trouble. No use in trying to smooth talk a madman into giving up his nuclear ambitions, and his ambitions to start a war in attempt to leave a legacy for his son. Many believe this is exactly what he is trying to do.

Here is another comment on this article:

Quote:
by zonkzilla June 29, 2009 4:12 AM PDT

By moving the missile defense system to Hawaii in spite of threats not to do so, President Obama is the only US President to stand up to North Korea and now North Korea is shocked that the US is not bowing to their will as Bush did.

It is good to have a President that does not reward North Korea for their insane threats and actions.

North Korea's statements are irrational, if the US wanted to launch a pre-emptive strike we wouldn't need a missile defense system because it would all be over in a few seconds.

President Obama shows he is not afraid when he says we will break the old game of North Korea threatens and the US gives them what they want.

This is great to see a president who will not longer give in to the old game. N. Korea has been conditioned so long to squawk and get economic help or money in the process and has fooled the world already in so doing. No longer will we put up with this behavior. N. Korea may indeed start a war, but it will not get them very far. Certainly it will be devastation upon itself and the fall of the communist regime. Certainly nobody wants a war yet at the moment there seems to be now way out of this impass without one. Perhaps by further increasing and extending the sections with further UN resolutions may be necessary. Continual and increased pressure from China and Russia towards N. Korea is necessary also. These two countries must insist that N. Korea disarm or warn them they will face the consequences for not doing so.

Another interesting piece of info:

Quote:

North Korea had better wake up, President Obama is not one to be messed with! No other President has had the guts to do something like this, none.
Once again the Obama haters look like fools with their lies about our President. I think the message is crystal clear.

"VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) - The Air Force has successfully launched an unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile from the California coast to an area in the Pacific Ocean some 4,200 miles away.

Lt. Raymond Geoffroy says the ICBM was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 3:01 a.m. Monday and carried three unarmed re-entry vehicles to their targets near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands."

China and Russia do not want North Korea to attract an attack, whether the attack is preemptive or as a result of North Korea doing something stupid. It will be up to China and Russia to exert their influence to reign in NK. NK cannot reach us, the reported best possible range their missile has is 800 miles short of Hawaii. They can definitely invade South Korea, but the last time they did their military was ultimately soundly defeated and routed - it was the Chinese intervention that prolonged the Korean War.

Whatever the outcome of this, N. Korea stands to loose. If they use a nuclear weapon, they will be devastated as the UN will not just sit back and watch as they use such a device upon another country or people. If they attach S. Korea, the US and UN would are and will be poised to defend and support S. Korea, so this will not get N. Korea very far, particularly without anyone to help them should they conduct such an un-necessary act. So whatever N. Korea does it will not get very far. It has no choice but to reduce it's nuclear capacity or face further sanctions, isolation and impoverishment. Sooner or later N. Korea must wake up to this reality.
