| I had sketch books and drew prolifically when I was a teenager. Though, admittedly, if computers were around then I may well have been intrigued by their magic powers! I agree that I am probably also addressing the advice to myself. These days too much 'design' is done by CAD programmes and I found that once I had learnt Autocad I was tempted to bury my pencil sharpener at the bottom of a drawer! It's a shame, drawing is a much respected and valued talent that requires nothing more sophisticated than a pencil and sheet of paper. |

I design with pencil long before I draw in CAD. I work out my details with a pen or pencil. And yes, I too sketched a lot during my entire life...and still do, when I can. I think sketching improves the skill of an architect and especially a draftsman who truly wants to learn how to draw better details. We are in the graphic communication business afterall...

I still have a drafting board....... and I actually use it It would be hard to call what I do on it drafting. I start with trace paper and a pencil also.
But on the other hand - people seem to forget that the computer is just the new pencil. I am flipping back and forth so much between paper, sketchup, CAD that is all becomes the same at some point.
I am moving between those three alot and still will do a chipboard model when it seems appropriate.
But getting back to the original issue - so many people think all we do is sit in front of a computer and "design" and its far more complex than that...... if your good.
We need to get more involved as a profession at the high schools and maybe earlier and educate kids about what Architecture really is about.
...... if we could eliminate CAD drafting at the high school that would be a start |

I can't work without sketching out my ideas...so I agree. We all definitely have to go back and forth...that's the nature of the profession. But the CAD Simians (haha) don't...they just draw with colored lines on a black background. It's why the sense of scale seems to be all out of whack with these kids! ha!
But I don't get why you say we ought to do away with drafting in high school. What bad (or good) does it do?

I use CAD prolifically, I have a 22" Acer flat screen, it is useles when I have to allocate spaces for 8 self standing office buildings, parking spaces, fire engine requirements, etc. in a 400' x 100' piece of land.
After I complete hand sckletching in paper, then i do CAD work better than a monkey. Hand drawing, geometry, math, understanding of perspective, are great assets for anyone who wishes to be an architec or a BD. |
