ALTHOUGH PERIODICALLY THREATENED BY DEMOLITION, the Sanlitun district has survived as Beijing ’s number one nightilife location for over a decade and if anything, appears to grow a little bit more each year. This is the place for bars, restaurants and \, increasingly, shopping.

The atmosphere is extremely in formal and at weekends most bars are guaranteed a large and extremely lively crowd.

The area around Snlitun (pronounce san-lee-tour by locals)began overhauling its streets and laeways in October 2005, beginning with the clearing of a huge space to build a complex for tourists of bars, restaurants, clothes stores and art malls just off Gongti Bei Lu, along Sanlitun Bar Street. A work in progress, the new Sanlitun will take shape around may favourite locals hotspots throughout 2006.

There is much to recommend Snlitun Bar Street and just as much to warn against it . Taking a short stroll along its crowded pavement you will soon be approached by friendly but it has to be said intrusive bar touts vying for your business. While this can be off-puttting, some of the bar are great fun but keep an eye on your belongings and your drunken friends, make up your own mind.

Before the Bar Street hustle starts, early evening drop into Nali Mall, a laneway on the right hand side, 200 metres from Gonti Bei Lu, where you will find a treasure trove of snack bars, clothes boutiques, a superb Brazilian restaurant called Alameda and Spanish tapas,

Also nearby . look out for Tong Li Mall. Directly opposite the entrance to Nali Mall, on the other side of the street, follow a small laneway for 100 meters, turn right and Tong Li Mall is on your right.Inside find Bar Blu, Café Nero, and Shanghai Tang Chic clothes and jewellery stores. A cool little spot.

Sanlitun North

Sanlitun does have a quieter side, though Move north crossing the wide expanse of Dongzhimenwei, the streets soon become leafy and sedate where spacious but discrete diplomatic residences and international restaurants, behind attractive veneers, line an elegant cobweb of interconnecting residential roads that lead to the banks of the Liangmahe River to the east.

Probably the best collection of international restaurants in Beijng are housed inthis area of Snlitum. On West Five Street, the first turning on the left off Sanlitun North Street, going north, find Athena, an inexpensive, atmospheric Greek restaurnant with very friendly service staff. On the same street, Serve The People, plies popular Asia-fusion food to an upscale crowd during the day and evening

Nearby, The Beijing Indian Kitchen on Liangmahe Nan Lu serves you a curry you had forgooten you longed for. Far from your home and your very own curry house,. The local Indian community fill the place out most nights and give it an indispensable authentic feel, so get there early or book, Onec tasted, you soon find you need to return. The prices are right too.

Around the corner on Snlitun Beiji Xiao Jie ( North Street ), late-night food shopping is entirely possible at Jenny Lou’s newly opened western supermarket. Open early til late and conveniently roomy on two floors, Jenny Lou’s new space is nott unlike a store in the US or Canadian store and serves the local community of expats with products usually hard to find in Beijing . Go there for cheese, salami, olive oil, brown bread, Italian wines and butter, breakfast cereals and bathroom products.

If not to late on your day round the city, drop by The Friendship Store on Snlitun North Street, and pick up local English magazines and press, also conventiently available around Sanlitun at selected restaurants. The Friendship Store closes at 5 p.m

Keep an eye heavenwards for the roof terrace at Assagegi, an established Italian Restaurant and Bar just up from Jenny Lou’s on North Street ( Beijing Xiao Jie). Assggi is a popular upscale hunt for local residents and frequent visitor to the city and well known for its pasta dishes and the contemporary art hanging on its walls.

Books

Back on the corner of Snlitun Bar Steet and Gongti Bei Lu and getting into a taxi way passed midnight, remember its worth reurning to the Snlitun area in daylight Here’s why:

Le Petit Gourmand on the 3 rd floor of the Tong Li Mall is a café-- forum abuse --bibrary with books to brwse while you eat. This concept was first developed in Beijing by The Bookworm, now on Nan Snlitun Lu, across Gongti Bei Lu, first turn on the left. Also a café and lending library, the bookworm has Internet access, reasonably priced coffee, snacks and many titles to choose from. Its also open surprisingly late : 9 a .m -1 a .m. In both, a smaller number of books are for sale.

Xhtc...

Thank you for the guided tour of Sanlitun of Beijing.

Can you post any digital images of traditional Chinese/Beijing architecture within Sanlitun, and faces, fashion of the traditional residents?

Also, from Beijing, I have read where there was a temple dedicated to the "Great White God of the West", Mt. Hua, for which I am very interested on its historical origins, its architectural composition, and symbolics, etc.

For example, I have the following photo galleries for our readers to view, possibly you know of some for Sanlitun, and thank you.
