Errant font checker
Has the ‘errant font checker’ been helpful to anyone? The people who designed the font tester have requested feedback.

All,
Today I was painfully reminded that some who regularly post here have others in their office with font crashes.
You did run errant font checker on everyone’s computer didn’t you?

I found the font checker to be great fun. WOW I need to get a life. I find my self running the checker ... its fun to watch ... when I need a break from the grind. I have way to many fonts (172) but they all are heathy.

Ran it on three of four computers here so far. No problems identified with our fonts, some of which are very old. (Microsoft Works...)
Maybe it should be adapted into a screen saver since everyone enjoys it so much. |

We've used it. Found no bad fonts yet. Almost wish I had one just see what happens.
Wish I could run it in slow motion. It screems by on a G-5.

Bill,
I found it useful as it told me I didn't have any bad fonts. Nice to know this as much as it is to find a bad one.
I have a question (probably for Todd). Does it look in the font folders for each user on a single mac or does each user need to run it once they login?
If Todd is interested, it would be nice if it gave a small report at the end:
Folder path checked
Number of font families found (in this folder)
Number of font files checked (in this folder)
Folder path checked
Number of font families found (in this folder)
Number of font files checked (in this folder)
.
.
Thanks for asking and thanks for providing the tool. It's worthy of wider ditribution as others beyond the realm of PowerCADD could use it. VersionTracker maybe?

| I ran it and have suggested to a few friends that they run it too. Worked great for me. I have a new G-5 with only the fonts that came with it (which are more than plenty) however. |

Thanks for the feedback!
The way the font checker works is that it uses a system routine to build the font menu, which it then iterates over. The fonts checked would include fonts in your System, you user and OS9 folders. Other users have to run the font checker to test fonts in their user's folder.
In the next version I'll do a bit more reporting when the check is complete.

Derek,
Only the system calls that are used by PowerCADD are confirmed. Other applications are likely to use different and maybe older or newer system API’s. The API’s are also subject to being used in a different manner in each application.
The short answer is that the AVAILABLE fonts to PowerCADD are checked. It is entirely possible that you might have a font that is bad and not currently available to PowerCADD in which case the font checker would not identify it as errant. Frankly the focus is to reduce the crash rate in PowerCADD to ZERO. Once the crash rate for PowerCADD is zero then we can worry about the rest of the world’s software. Besides Gates can fend for himself.
As you know 50% in quality assurance sampling is a very enormous number to associate to a single issue.
Lets reduce the crashes to ZERO. With the information in the crash logs it is possible.

Todd and Bill,
Thanks for the info on what the font checker does and where it looks. These are important details to know.
If I had known how targeted the checker is, I wouldn't have suggested the wider audience. I don't suggest for a moment that you should spend time developing it for the others. My comment was more a compliment that it would go down well across the board.
It's a great tool for the users of PowerCADD and it will help all of us reach the goal of a crashless PowerCADD.
I'm a happy camper.
