As part of my current studio I'm working on a performing arts centre for a specific growing town/city not far from Perth Australia.
I'm very much interested in pursuing a built-form language which isn't hostile to the notion of the occupants changing/extending/altering/re-decorating their building several years down the track. A building which isn't formally 'closed' if you follow (many cultural projects like this always have a 'as-is' quality, and the building's users and future architects have a hard time making alterations without damaging the aesthetic and functional workings of the original project). My concept is very much that the town's needs and wants and tastes will change over time, so I want to offer them an Arts building which will welcome their input once the original architect is long gone.
I have some concepts I plan to follow though, but would like to hear some suggestions of other completed (or hypothetical) projects which have a similar attention to creating a built form which lends itself to adaptability, future extension, and encourages changing the visual aesthetics over time (whether through removing and replacing the skin, etc).
Can anyone suggest some other projects to look at?

You could offer your client a prefab steel building shell which will containn the basic heedssuch as rest rooms, perhaps an administrator office and conference room. Thr rest could be open aspace to be used to put temporary needs, offices, meeting rooms, art display areas, etd.
The pre fab buildings can be made to look like a million dolar palaces, or humble industrial buildings.
Look what Hollywood do to build sets for movies, they are always flexible. |
