I have been working in the design of energy eficient and energy independent homes for nearly 5 years and no matter how green a project, how technically advanced or how much CO2 is saved the same question always crops up - How much to build?
How much to build is no longer relevent. The questions that everyone knows should be asked is what is the return on my investment.
It is common knowledge that energy efficient buildings are more expensive to build but in lifetime costs to run is far cheaper and the benefits of healthy living is enormous.
Can we afford not to build green?

it is tough with homes though since, especially these days, many homes are not occupied by their original owners for the lifetime of the home- so those owners never realized the savings... and related to that it is also much more difficult to finance, refinance, or resell a very high tech green home since the understanding of the technology is not common and there are few other examples to compare to locally in most cases...
although there is a massive amount of housing built i think the most important battle front is commercial construction that is intended to last for several decades...long enough and on a scale able to realize the savings in the life of the building and owner |
