The americans said that the shooting came from a checkpoint, but, as I understand it, the initial Italian report says that the shooting was not from a checkpoint.

The bluff and bluster approach simply will not work, such as the US governments representative saying that it is ridiculous to think that american troops would have targetted them. The credibility of the US military is not that high. There have been too many lies.

Had this been a tragic accident, while unlikely given the prominence of the circumstances, the reactions from both sides would have been different.

Let's talk about this ransom business for a bit. The United States refuses to pay for the release of hostages. Italy has a history of doing so. We refuse to pay because it rewards the hostage-takers and encourages yet more kidnappings. It can be said that Italy's actions in paying for the release of Sgrena served to increase the level of danger for every other westerner in Iraq. Time, I guess, will tell. The point here is that there are reasons to be upset with their side too.

I can see no connection between what you say about whether or not one should pay a ransom and the attack on the Italians.

Surely you cannot be saying that the Italians were attacked by Americans because they disagreed with America.

The U.S. Military says that they weren't warned in advance about the release of Sgrena and that she would be driven to the airport after that release. Why wasn't the U.S. told? Because:

The US refuses to pay for hostage releases because it rewards the hostage-takers and encourages yet more kidnappings.
and
that the Italians were afraid that we might try to dissuade them from paying the ransom and might actually interfere in some way with this release of Sgrena.

So the Italy's first mistake was in not telling the U.S. Military that you are going to be making a run for the airport with a freed hostage.....that they had paid for the release of....and to not play into the hand of a policy of the US on how it handles Islamic Terrorists.....that is the connection.

In a formal statement Italy's Foreign Minister has clearly stated that the car transporting Sgrena was not speeding towards a checkpoint and that the Americans had been kept fully informed of both her release and transportation to the airport.

Some other facts are coming out, and things don't look so good for the Italians. According to a report in the Washington Times, the Italian security forces didn't tell anyone what they were doing, failed to request American security and just, in general, screwed up as much as possible. An internal Pentagon memo states that 500 American troops have been killed on the roads in Iraq. Another official points out that of all the cars that passed through the checkpoint that night, only the Italians were shot at, so they must have been doing something out of the ordinary.

Yesterday the Italians were saying that their car wasn't speeding. Just a few hours later the story was that the driver floored it when he saw the soldiers.

There is only one real truth in this whole mess ... and that is the truth that America's enemies will manipulate and exploit this story as much as they possibly can to further their anti-American aims and goals.

It's good to see our president fighting back on this one, and nice to see the administration has a limit for this nonsense.

The Washington Times was founded by the Moonies, literally.

It is a legitimate source for nothing.

Yes, torture, the Bush administration has finally had enough of Communist "journalist" Giuliana Sgrena's little shenanigans. As we now know, this is the communist propagandist whose freedom was bought from Islamic terrorists by the Italian government, and whose car was shot at by a U.S. Army checkpoint. Since this incident, she has said a number of things, including:

* She has accused the United States of directly targeting her
* She has sided with her captors, who told her that the Americans would not want her to escape alive
* She has said the United States does not value human life
* She has repeatedly changed her story as to what happened, at one point saying her car was shot at 400 times and another time saying it was shot at by a tank

Finally, the White House had enough of the so-called reporter who writes for the Communist "Il Manifesto."....literally, that is what it is. White House Spokesman Scott McClellan yesterday said "It's absurd to make any such suggestion, that our men and women in uniform would target individual citizens." Again, nice to see the administration has a limit for this nonsense.

It is the Italian Foreign Minister who says that the American explanation is less than truthful.

However Italians (and of course now Bulgarians) can form their own opinion of whether or not they want their troops serving alongside, and being endangered by, the American Ustash.

Mind you, the Israelis must be laughing themselves silly. The Americans cannot even assassinate a woman journalist without screwing up. The Israelis do a thorough job - no risk of Hariri complaining afterwards.

It reads here: Since the war, the airport road has not been any ordinary highway. It is a battleground; a place without rules or certainties, a place where there are no guarantees of safety for civilians or soldiers of any nationality.

This is an account from LA Times reporter Alissa Rubin of what the seven-mile road between Baghdad and the airport is like. She has the first-person details and even was on the road the day the Italians were shot at. I don't think she is from the house of moon, but out on the west coast, one never knows.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/iraq/la-fg-airportroad7mar07,0,902949.story?coll=la-home-headlines

Anyway, read for yourself and as always, do your own research in what you believe to be true....and of course, judge it with a grain of salt...especially when the Moonies are blamed.

But you have been telling us how well everything is going in Iraq these days.

Now you say that the Jolly Green Giant of Democracy cannot even keep the main airport road open ?

Anyway, I think that the Italian Foreign Minister has credibility, so I will choose to believe what he says until America comes up with something that does not involve abusing the victims.

Yes, freedom and democracy is spreading throughout the region....rest assured about that.....as for yesterdays tragic event on the highway, here is a translation of the report Giuliana Sgrena filed for the Italian communist newspaper she works for. Interesting that she admits she knew the area near the airport was heavily patrolled by American troops.

Truth or Consequences?
