In Ver 2000, to rotate a line, several objects or a group, I would simply select wht was to be rotated, hit "R", then click for the center point of the rotation.
Now, in Ver 6, the mouse click automatically goes to the center of the line, object, whatever. This is REALLY annoying.
How can I get this to run like it used to?

You can specify any location as the centre point of rotation. It may be snapped to an object, to the grid or off the grid.
If the insertion point for the dynamic rotation is automatically snapping to object geometry (which it should do) try pressing the Command key to override the object and/or grid snap. It might be your drawing is just a bit crowded and the mouse is 'close enough' to a centre point of some object.
You can also try adjusting the Snap Distance settings in Layout menu > Drawing Setup > Snap . The value in the Snap Distance field will affect the autosnapping behavior, the distance may be too large for your drawing conditions or your drawing style/preference. The Snap Distance (in pixels) allows the insertion point to 'jump' to a basic snap point (e.g. Centre) even though the cursor is not directly over the basic snap point/object. The larger the snap distance, the farther away the cursor can be from the actual object. Pages 4-187 through 4-189 of the manual describe the many of the new Drawing Setup features which may be helpful
As you can see from this demonstration movie (540KB) , the dynamic rotation point can be anywhere. You can also see how the auto snapping works when the cursor is within # pixels (9 in this example) of an objects basic snap point such as the centre of a line or circle. In the demo flick, the Centre snap occurred automatically when the cursor was 9 pixels away from the centre of the circle
Hope that helps

Thanx, but this doesn't help. No matter what I do, it always rotates on the center snap, even if the highlight comes up for end, for example.
Also, in Ver 2000 I could rotate based on my defaults angles by holding the shift key. This doesn't happen now either.
As I have said, I copy, mirror, rotate objects and groups A LOT, as I don't want to redraw things. It is disappointing to lose the rotate tool.

The problem of always rotating about the Center has to be system specific since I can rotate items from any point (center, vertex, end, % snap, off grid, etc.). What steps have been taken to ensure a clean version of PowerCADD is being used? Is the problem confined to existing drawings only or can it be replicated with a new, Untitled factory default drawing? Seeing a particular example may be helpful in uncovering a possible source of the problem.
Pressing Shift when Rotating will constrain the rotation angle in 5 degree increments. I agree pressing Shift should constrain to the preset snap angles as this would be consistent with other tools, commands and older versions. Having to read the edit window to see when a preset angle has been reached can be frustrating. Alternatively it's possible to tab into the Edit window and specify the angle but this is slower when dealing with preset snap angles.
hope that helps

Just to confirm, have you tried pressing the Command key to override all snaps before clicking to specify the center point of rotation?
Command will override all snaps and should allow you to place the center point of rotation anywhere on the drawing page. If that isn't working then something else is going on. |

Yep. Why is it different now? I use this tool a lot - or used to.

it appears it isn't different... so my earlier questions still apply...
without a specific example or knowing what is going on specifically at your system end there's no way to tell. The center of rotation can be anywhere and command does override snapping. |

My Rotation tool works exactly as you describe it in yuor first post.
It must be something file specific or system specific.
Try wuitting PowerCADD, moving the following files to your desktop, relaunching PowerCADD (the files will rebuild), and see if you are still getting the strange activity:
Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/PowerCADD
Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/com.engsw.PowerCADD.plist

It occurred to me to check the other machines here too, and they all have the same problem. If you would be so kind as to tell me where to find these files, I will try your solution - I couldn't find them by either looking or a search.
Thanx

This caddpower.com article describes the various Pcadd 6 preference file locations for OS X
hope that helps

Hmmm....
I don't know how to be more specific than giving you the file paths, which again are:
Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/PowerCADD
Users/<user>/Library/Preferences/com.engsw.PowerCADD.plist
On the top level of your hard drive is a folder named Users.
Inside that folder is a folder with your <user> name on it.
Inside that folder is a folder named Library.
Inside that folder is a folder named Preferences.
Inside that folder is a folder and a file having to do with PowerCADD.
Hope that helps.
