Time magazine has chosen President George W. Bush as its "Person of the Year." It used to be called Man of the Year, but it was changed in 1999 to be more inclusive. Whatever. Anyway, this is the second time the president has been so honored, the first time was in 2000. Al Gore hasn't been the same since.
So would Bush have been chosen a second time had he not won re-election? Of course not....the Person of the Year probably would have been JK. They were all just so sure Kerry was their man, weren't they? Time magazine probably had the cover all drawn up weeks in advance.

I didn't see the baiting, dissing and so forth, but in cold hard reality, the president was re-elected easily and now he's the Person of the Year. That will sell a lot of magazines and generate no small amount of complaints.
I did hear the Time reporter yesterday on CNN talking about the selection. She talked about our "bad economy." Bad? We have record low unemployment levels, record high family wealth, record homeownership, inflation is low, gas prices are on the way down ... and it's a "bad economy?" This reporter also preached of John Kerry as being a war hero and complained that George Bush had eagles instead of doves on the White House Christmas Tree.
Well, at least she called it a Christmas Tree  |

| Let's see -- there's the economy that benefits stockholders (fewer employees means higher "earnings"), the economy that benefits Halliburton, Raytheon, GE etc ("war is good for the economy"), the economy that benefits the energy industry (profits from conventional energy discourage diversification). . .yeah, the economy's doing great! |

...and the media declares Christmas an economic bust...yes, Christmas is over, and the reports are coming in from the media and they don't look good. The overwhelming verdict? The Christmas shopping season was a complete bust, retailers are disappointed and nobody bought anything. How will the republic survive?
They are now reporting that the public is out in force looking for the cheapest price. Imagine that! Shoppers looking for a bargain? How dare they! Don't they know they're supposed to go to these stores and pay as much as possible? So let me get this straight....we're supposed to believe:
Retail sales have been disappointing, yet.... Stores and mall parking lots are jammed with bargain hunters looking for deals, because.... The economy is rebounding, however... We're supposed to believe the entire holiday season was lackluster. Right.
Now ask yourself this: when is the last time you read a story that said Christmas shopping was going like gangbusters and retailers were having the Christmas of their dreams? That's right, never. Every year it's the same thing: shoppers aren't spending enough and are looking for bargains. When's the last time somebody wanted to pay more for something? Does anyone not ever look for the best price?
The bottom line is doom and gloom sells, and that's how the media and SDR spins things. |
