Vehicles Miles Traveled Per Capita Per Day, abbreviated simply as "VMT", is a useful measure of some aspects of the transportation/land use connection. Compact urban areas allow more living with fewer and/or shorter car trips, and thus achieve lower VMT. Sprawling areas tend to require more and longer auto trips, and thus create higher VMT levels.

In Oregon, there is an official state planning goal of reducing (or at least not increasing) VMT, even as the urban areas in the state continue to grow. To achieve this important step toward sustainability requires ongoing improvements in integrated land use and transporation planning.

This map (JPEG attachment) shows the VMT in Eugene/Springfield by geographic area. The base map is from LCOG, to which I've added a bold outline at the approximate contour of the average metro area VMT.

Increasing development outside this contour - even increasing density - will broadly tend to increase the average Eugene area VMT. Increasing density inside the average VMT contour will tend to lower (improve) the VMT level.
