Alright, I'll take a stab at it with an example from last semester.
Our project for studio was to design an elementary school in the South End of Boston. The site was as about 86,000sf, roughly. Our open space requirement for the project was that we had to have more than 25,000sf available for the public to access. Its sort of tough to explain, but the site has two streets flanking each side of it, so both streets needed to be addressed when designing the school. My site analysis phase of the project brought me to a point where I had two open spaces, one on each side of the site, that related to another nearby open space offsite (one being a park across the street and one being a triangular patch of greenery down the street.) Andy by connection to these spaces I mean visual connection so that one would be drawn through a sequence of these open spaces, therefore creating more public gathering places on the site of the school.
Now I had this really strong idea of what I wanted to do with these open spaces, and my teacher really liked the idea of these two open spaces, each having separate identities while on the same site. But in the end it was pointed out to me that my design didn't end up creating these powerful urban spaces that I set out to. I mean yes they were both open spaces, but they were not nearly as successful as I wanted them to be (and neither was my school itself for that matter) Its almost like I lost sight of the main concept of these open spaces got lost in translation when I got deep into the design. I tend to get caught up in over designing the little things in the project, and lose sight of the big picture.
My teacher told me at the end of the semester, that I would be presented with a problem to solve in the project, and would come really close to the correct answer but never quite get there. I feel like I'm always real close to finding a solution, but have always come up short. So there's my best attempt to try and explain this. |
