Hi everybody, my name is Billy from S. California and work with HGTV. I eventually plan on buying a house and was wondering what the process of designing your own house and building it involves ? Also is it a more expensive route to go ?

Hi Billy,

This is a common question that many home buyers have. Generally speaking, building a custom house can be more expensive. When you buy a house from a builder, you benefit from economies of scale, i.e., a large builder pays lower cost of material, lower land price and better labor efficiency due to volume. Another option between build and buy: some builders sell you a piece of property - select from many different architectural plans the builder has with your own customization. In this case, you get the benefit of scale and some customization.

I currently live in a house I bought. I eventually want to build a house to fit my exact needs. However, living in a non-custom house for some years has given me an idea of what I like and dislike in a house.

In any case, I hope this is helpful and good luck with your plans for a house.

Cheers,
Shan

btkid -

a home that can be chosen out of a magazine will probably have just that as far as look and feel. It cant really be that customized for you, as an individual given its assembly line building process. While these homes tend to be a bit cheaper, remember you get what you pay for. As an architect I know the care that design professionals put into a home, from custom build ground up beginnings. Typical builders are looking to get these homes out "efficiently" which translates to fast and shoddy work in many cases. If you want to pay an architect to design something that is right for YOU, just remember that its about a dime investment to every dollar that you'll have someone making sure the job gets done according to your standards and needs, and not just settling on what you had to choose from a list.

good luck.
